Grievance: I hate "Dark and Edgy" reboots

| Oh dark and edgy...pfft |
I'm really tired of this attempt to be dark, gritty, and edgy. I get enough of that in the real world, why in hell's name would I want that in my fiction? Trick question, I don't unless it is in service to the story or character. But DC, like a lot of other media companies, seems to think that if they just superficially turn down the lights and add some blood and nudity it'll make their works more 'adult'. Here's what C.S. Lewis had to say about that:
Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.
I agree Mr. Lewis, I agree 100%.

A bit old but damn it, this is an awesome film. Also here's something that I love, still dark and gritty in subject matter, but none of the bullshit of trying to be 'adult' when it is already grown up. It deals with race issues in America, the African diaspora, colonization and its brutality, Afro-futurism and the mistakes of past generations along with the triumph of the new generation to set things right! Damn that's a mouthful, but yeah that is some heavy topics to broach in a movie but not once did I see anything that turned me off from this film or even attempted to be 'adult'. Go grab it on DVD and watch it you will be entertained and it might just make you think about a few things.
